Harmonic is the leader in native IP digital headend solutions, offering customers a portfolio of products that perform the full range of video processing functions including: satellite and terrestrial reception of digital content, encoding, grooming, statistical multiplexing, encryption, IP transport to the remote headend, IP-based edge processing, and service management. With a focus on open systems, Harmonic designs solutions that support the DVB standard and are fully integrated with leading conditional access systems. High DefinitionFor cable operators, the DiviCom® MV 500 MPEG-2 HD encoder offers a best-in-class solution for HD services. As opposed to rate shaping which can result in a degradation of video quality, the MV 500 makes it possible for cable operators to deliver as many as four HD programs within a single 256-QAM channel. For MPEG-4 AVC (H.264) architectures, Harmonic’s latest generation Electra™ 7000 HD encoder leapfrogs the industry estimates for bit-rate reductions possible with H.264—generally considered in the range of 50% compared to MPEG-2 HD—by delivering high quality video in the range of 3-8 Mbps depending on the type of content and resolution selected. Beyond the performance and quality benefits, the Electra is also a multi-channel, multi-service encoder capable of delivering up to four full and low resolution channels in 1RU for applications including PiP, enhanced program guides and multi-channel mosaics. In addition to offering superior video compression, Harmonic’s DiviTrack™ statistical multiplexing solutions (IP or ASI) further enhance bandwidth efficiency and allow operators to invest incrementally and create multiplexes as needed. Harmonic introduced the world’s first IP-based statistical multiplexing solution, DiviTrackIP™, providing a highly flexible solution for “virtual headends”. Cable operators today are implementing Harmonic statistical multiplexing for 3:1 conversion of their existing HD channels and addition of more HD to the channel lineup. |
