Access Solutions for Highly Efficient HFC Networks

Harmonic enables cable operators to deliver more bandwidth to the home with a number of solutions for the HFC network, including segmentation, fiber-deep architectures and 1-GHz expansion.

While the need for bandwidth continues to expand, the cost of adding fiber remains prohibitive for most operators. Thus it becomes ever more critical to use existing fiber as efficiently as possible while still providing the additional services consumers expect—a challenge made more formidable by the fact that the reach of 1310 WDM systems decreases as the number of wavelengths increases. The innovative SUPRALink 1550 nm DWDM transmission system cost-effectively addresses these issues.

SUPRALink is able to transmit 1-GHz of digital and analog content with up to 8 wavelengths per fiber, to an unprecedented link distance of 40km with optical amplification. SUPRALink offers operators up to 40% deeper fiber reach than 1310 nm systems, with comparable cost and a more robust operation. Harmonic also offers a full range of nodes, transmitters and receivers for bandwidth extension to 1-GHz.

Harmonic’s digital return path systems increase network capacity, scalability, reach, reliability and manageability. Integral to network segmentation, the enhanced upstream capacity of the digital return transmitters and receivers supports the provisioning of more symmetric high-speed Internet access services and emerging two-way applications such as telephony, video conferencing, gaming and content-on-demand.
